Articles About RV Problems and Modifications

Over the years I have owned several RVs. You can see some photos and statistics in this article, Good Times on the Road.

RVs always have problems. Mostly they are minor but occasionally a manufacturer makes a major mistake. There are also tweaks that RV owners like to make to their rigs. This area of my website details all the problems and modifications I have made to various RVs over the years.

Another Ramp Door Problem

Keystone Cougar 325SRX > Problems
I recently noticed a crack in the siding at the lower right side of the rear ramp door opening on my Keystone Cougar 325SRX Toy Hauler.

Split Loading Ramp Door

Keystone Cougar 325SRX > Problems
This seems to be a common problem in the online Keystone forum. It only seems to affect the smaller doors. I don't know how the door is manufactured but from the outside it looks like two sheets of material are butt joined in the center of the door but the edges are not connected in any way. As loads are applied to the door the two sheets of material move independently. This stretches the non skid

Extra Loading Ramp

Keystone Cougar 325SRX > Outside Modifications
The door on the Keystone Cougar 325SRX is only 6 feet tall. That makes the door very steep as a ramp. Keystone corrected that by adding a extra ramp attached to the door via hinges. For a golf cart, ATV or non street motorcycle this would work fine. But Ruby, our 2006 Honda Goldwing, kept dragging on the hinge.

Water Filter

Keystone Cougar 325SRX > Outside Modifications
My Forest River Wildcat had a water filter and I really liked it. I remember as a kid when we would travel across country, each day the water smelled and tasted different. Sometimes the chlorine was pretty strong.

Fantastic Vent

Keystone Cougar 325SRX > Inside Modifications
My Forest River Wildcat came from the factory with a Fantastic Vent. I really liked that thing.

Water Heater Switch

Keystone Cougar 325SRX > Inside Modifications
I really like the electric heating element in the water heater. But not having a switch inside for the heating element is stupid.

Slide Out Screw

Keystone Cougar 325SRX > Problems
One of the screws in the slide out trim was too long. It had damaged the seal and the aluminum trim on the sidewall where the seal meets the sidewall.

Goldwing Tie Downs in Garage

Keystone Cougar 325SRX > Inside Modifications
I am still experimenting with ways to tie down the Goldwing. I got the wheel stand from Harbor Freight for about $50. It has worked fine. When I put the Goldwing in the stand, the motorcycle stays upright by itself. I put E-Z Track along the wall in front of the motorcycle.

Leaking Garage Vent

Keystone Cougar 325SRX > Problems
The upper vent in the garage area was leaking from the factory. My unit sat on the lot for a few months so who knows how many times it got wet. The factory cut the hole too large for the vent.

Damaged Grease Seals and Brakes

Keystone Cougar 325SRX > Problems
This just really ticks me off. I had the unit jacked up and gave each tire a spin. One of the tires was "sticky". It did not spin easily. So I removed the wheel and the brakes were coated in grease.

Retractable AC Cord

Keystone Cougar 325SRX > Outside Modifications
I use a cheap 1/2 inch drill to lower and raise the rear stabilizer jacks. To make that process easy I installed a retractable AC cord reel in the storage area.

Generator Wiring and Power Transfer Switch

Keystone Cougar 325SRX > Outside Modifications
I have a Honda EU3000 generator that I love. When traveling across country we sometimes just need to put some miles behind us for 3-4 days. With the Honda we can stay in Wal-Marts or truck stops for quick overnight stays while having the comfort of air conditioning and TV. During the hot months I also run the air conditioner in the RV while on the road.
