Recently my life took a new direction and I think I will blog about my transition. Maybe something I say will help someone and maybe someone will have some good advice for me.

My Dad's grandmother often gave her grandchildren advice about life that could be summed up in one sentence. My Dad passed those on to his children. One that I never truly appreciated until I was an adult and a father was "Sometimes you have to laugh to keep from crying."

There are many resources on the internet for surviving a lay off. You should use them. Not every piece of advice will apply to your situation but you will find information that can help. Here is my strategy.

A cousin contacted me yesterday regarding our great great great grandfather William Ellington Bond. I had put together a Genealogy book for my family in 2005 and decided to look through it for information regarding our grandfather. Finances will probably cause more stress for you during a lay off than any other challenge you face. I had been expecting a lay off for years so my finances are in decent shape. But on Jan 14 when I heard the Nortel CEO say that all severance payments would end immediately I was a little panicked. No. Very panicked. Sick at my stomach panicked.

If you travel in a camper very much you create traditions and collect camper items that stay in the camper. The plaque above was purchased sometime in the 70's and was kept in the family fifth wheel camper when I was a kid. When I purchased my first camper my Dad gave me this plaque for my camper. It has traveled almost 100,000 miles with me over the last 12 years.

Last year during Christmas Bradley and I talked about building a trebuchet but never did. This year with all the concern about the end of the world on Dec 21 we felt a little more urgency. We did not get it built in time for the end of the world but Bradley has been saying for six months that the Zombie apocalypse is going to happen any day so we decided we had better get prepared.

Laurie has walked in the Race For the Cure for Breast Cancer a few times and asked if I would walk with her this year. I said sure, why not.

My son, Bradley, wants to go to Mars. One way. Never to return.

On June 26, 2011 my son Bradley found a Nikon Coolpix S220 point and shoot camera laying in a gravel road near Panamint Springs in Death Valley. It took us two years to find the owner. This is a very neat story.

This tale of woe was caused by Mark, a buddy at SciQuest. It begins on a happy note as I had been selected to go on the annual SciQuest Pinnacle Club trip. My wife and I were really looking forward to a great time.

My cousin texted me and wanted some ideas on things to see during a trip from Kentucky to California this summer. They plan to purchase a used travel trailer. With a list of "must see" sights and "off the beaten path" photo ops to capture they want to take a road trip with their two sons to see if the RV vacationing lifestyle is for them.

This story starts in April when a storm brought down my neighbor's large red oak tree into our yard. I've always wanted that tree down. It did no damage to our asphalt driveway but was pretty rough on the moss and weeds we call a front yard. By cutting from both sides I was able to saw out some chunks and get the driveway clear.
