Start of the Day
We decided to get out a little earlier today as we expected to do some stops to sightsee. The sun rose as we were headed south from Truth or Consequences. I thought we would have plenty of time to get to our destination of Clovis, NM but several extended stops during the day put us behind.
Our first stop was White Sands National Park. Laurie spent more than her allotted time in the gift shop and returned with a booklet for collecting tokens from each of the national parks. We have our first token, White Sands NP.
We like outdoor metal art and Laurie noticed some later in the morning and asked me to do a u-turn so she look around. She took more than her allotted time again. After some negotiations and exchange of money I had more stuff to pack in our trailer. But it is stuff we both like so it is all good.
When I was planning our route during lunch at work a couple of months ago I picked US 82 and NM 244 through Cloudcroft, NM for our return. It did not look that impressive on Google Maps, but wow! We loved it. No wind, very cool temperatures and high elevations with Ponderosa pines. The lady at the outdoor metal sculpture place recommended we stop at Mad Jack's BBQ about 8 miles up the road. We are already planning a trip back to this place.
I don't really care for the vinegar based pork in NC. I prefer the tomatoe based BBQ sauce. I had the Swine pork sandwich with slaw. It came on a toasted sour dough bun. I don't think I've ever had a pork sandwich that tasted that good. The 4400 miles we rode to get to this place was worth every mile. We really are planning to return to this area and spend a couple days in Bisbee, AZ and a couple of days in the Cloudcroft, NM area just so we can eat here again.
They are not open every day so if you plan to go, call or check the web to make sure they are open. The elevation there was 8600 feet with a gentle breeze. The eating area was open so the cool breeze was blowing through the dinning area. Definitely one of the highlights of our trip.
From there we had many more miles of great high altitude riding. Then Roswell for some corny alien photos and the final late day ride to Clovis, NM. In all, it was one of the better days of our trip.
