Mount Scott OK

Located on the eastern edge of the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, Mount Scott is one of Oklahoma's most prominent mountains. A three-mile-long paved road leads to the summit and a breathtaking view of southwest Oklahoma. The peak towers 2,464 feet above sea level.

Comecos Cemetery, Granite OK

On the back roads of southwestern Oklahoma is the town of Granite, the latest home of the Comecos Cemetery a collection of fake headstones (made of real stone) with epitaphs that range from the silly to the goofy to the groan-inducing.

"I told you I was sick." "If men could get pregnant, abortion would be a sacrament." "Here lies John Yeast / Pardon me for not rising."

The funny cemetery was originally created by a veterinarian and his wife, Dan and Eleanor Roberts, at their home and clinic in Wichita Falls, Texas. After he retired, the "cemetery" was temporarily moved to Iowa Park, Texas. He later decided to relocate it to Granite in Oklahoma, the town where the headstones originated from. The site was dedicated there on November 4, 2006.

Abandoned Route 66 Roadbed, Hext OK

The original Portland Concrete road paved in 1929 and 1930 and later upgraded in 1956 can still be seen, abandoned, a few feet north of the modern road along this segment.

Sandhill Curiosity Shop, Erick OK

If you love visiting quirky places around Oklahoma, head west to Erick – The Redneck Capital Of The World – and visit The Sandhills Curiosity Shop. It's a shop where nothing is for sale but the experience and atmosphere keep visitors coming back year and year.

WWII German POW Camp

The Prisoner Of War (POW) camp at McLean was formally known as a Permanent Alien Internment Camp, and it was set up during World War II. Construction began in September 1942 and the first German prisoners arrived in July 1943. The camp had almost 30 buildings which accommodated military and civilian personnel as well as three compounds for the POWs.

There were also other buildings: quarters for bachelor officers and nurses, hospital, barber shop, theatre, laundry, Post Exchange and fire department. The first prisoners had been captured in North Africa, and had fought in General Erwin Rommel's Afrika Korps. The camp housed over 3,000 prisoners by October 1944. After the war ended, the camp closed in July 1945.
