Fridge Fan

I have to admit I got this idea from someone else.

I had a 12v fan from a computer case I wasn't using. These things are designed to run for a very long time. The fan was enclosed in a plastic housing. It was designed to force air through a computer case.

The fan runs while the door is shut but shuts off when the door is open.

The trick is to wire the fan across the switch for the light. One wire goes to each connector on the switch.

When the switch is closed and the light is on, the two wires are effectively connected together and no power is going to the fan. When the switch is open, the fan gets 12v from the source side of the switch and goes to ground through the light which is connected to the other side of the switch.

The bulb drops the voltage a little and the bulb may glow a very dim red because of the current going through it. However it does not put out any heat that you can feel and I've been doing this for a year and the bulb is still good.

Pretty slick.
