Franklin County Courthouse in Louisburg, North Carolina

Laurie and I like riding our Gold Wing motorcycle. But it is easy to get into a rut and just ride the same roads. So to force ourselves to ride to places we would not normally visit we made a goal to visit and photograph all 100 North Carolina courthouses within 1 year.

As usual, we got a little behind. We started in July 2015 and finished 99 out of 100 by June 2018. The last courthouse was in our home county of Wake and it took us until Feb 2021 to get that final one. But we made it! This blog is about one of those visits.

Many NC courthouses were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. The nomination form has some interesting facts about the various courthouse styles over the years.

Courthouse Information

I could not find the usual courthouse info in wikipedia. However a plaque on the outside said this courthouse was built in 1849-50 and was remodeled in 1936-37.

County Information

The North Carolina History Project lists the following information for this county:

Located in the northeast Piedmont region of North Carolina, and formed in the midst of the American Revolutionary War, Franklin County was carved out of the abolished Bute County and established in 1779. The county's name is attributed to Benjamin Franklin, a politician, statesman, and iconic founding father of the United States.

Although many times overshadowed by its neighbor, Wake County, Franklin County has significant destinations and has played a role in North Carolina's economic history. The county seat, Louisburg, is named in honor of King Louis XVI. Within its borders in 1805, the first junior college in the United States, now called Louisburg College, was founded. The Person Place, a restored eighteenth-century home in Louisburg, attracts many tourists. Within Franklinton, a small town in the western Franklin County, an example of North Carolina's scientific inquiry and technology exists: Novozymes North America Inc. plant, the largest multi-purpose enzyme manufacturing plant in the nation. Other important communities are Bunn, Centerville, and Youngsville.

A few historical notables and famous athletes have called Franklin County home. Thomas B. W. Bickett, the 54th Governor of North Carolina, lived in Louisburg for some time. Franklinton (population just under 2,000) has produced more famous athletes than many areas significantly larger. Boxer Jack Johnson, basketball player Henry Bibby, baseball players Jim Bibby (brother to Henry) and Wilbur Wade Card, and NFL player Wilmont Perry all hail from the small town. Other natives include U.S. Diplomat Moses A. Hopkins and country music singer Jason Michael Carroll.

Franklin County has many of the rolling hills that grace the North Carolina Piedmont countryside, but the Tar River also runs through it and provides an even more picturesque setting while providing a formerly important transportation route for the area's agricultural, lumber, and textile industries. For its scenery, Franklin County has, in some ways, become a bedroom community as people commute to neighboring Wake County, Raleigh, or Research Triangle Park to work.

Our Experience

The folks here were very friendly. I had only taken a couple of photos when the guard walked outside and asked "Do you want to see the bell?" Of course I said "Yes" and started walking inside. The guard said over his shoulder "Do you have any guns on you?" I answered "Not today."

At some point the bell had been found in the attic and with recent roof repairs, has to find another home.

As I stepped back outside to take some more photos two women came outside, shook hands with me and welcomed me to the courthouse. Patricia, the Clerk of Superior Court, took me back inside to tell me about the courthouse. There were photos on the wall of the courthouse over the years and the original deed for the property.

The courthouse was recently remodeled to add things like smoke alarms. Remember, this courthouse was built in 1849-50 and appears to be in very good condition. It is still in use and it is obvious the local people are proud of it. Patricia talked about the need to have a vibrant downtown.

We walked back outside and I asked her if they had a Confederate soldier statue. Their statue was just up the road at the College. We talked a little more about the statues across the state and the current trend of trying to remove Confederate monuments. Overall, a very pleasant visit. Patricia and the guard (did not get your name), thanks for your hospitality
