Alleghany County Courthouse in Sparta, North Carolina

Oct 11, 2015 Sun0

Laurie and I like riding our Gold Wing motorcycle. But it is easy to get into a rut and just ride the same roads. So to force ourselves to ride to places we would not normally visit we made a goal to visit and photograph all 100 North Carolina courthouses within 1 year.

As usual, we got a little behind. We started in July 2015 and finished 99 out of 100 by June 2018. The last courthouse was in our home county of Wake and it took us until Feb 2021 to get that final one. But we made it! This blog is about one of those visits.

Many NC courthouses were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. The nomination form has some interesting facts about the various courthouse styles over the years.

Courthouse Information

Wikipedia says the following about the courthouse:

Alleghany County Courthouse is a historic courthouse building located at Sparta, Alleghany County, North Carolina. It was built in 1933, and is a two-story, H-shaped Classical Revival style brick building. The front facade features a tetrastyle Tuscan order portico. It was built after "The Big Fire" of 1932 destroyed the courthouse and a block of businesses and homes.

It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

County Information

The North Carolina History Project lists the following information for this county:

The fifth smallest county in North Carolina, Alleghany County was formed from parts of Ashe County in 1859 by an act of the North Carolina General Assembly. It received its name from the Allegewi Indian word "oolikhanna" (beautiful stream). In 1825, Bower's Store became Alleghany's county seat. The town title would change twice until finally becoming Sparta in 1879. Piney Creek, Laurel Springs, Twin Oaks, Glade Valley, Roaring Gap, and Stratford are other communities within Alleghany County.

The Cherokee and Shawnee were the earliest known people to inhabit the area, but by the late 1700s European colonizers from England, Germany, Scotland, and Ireland populated the mountains. Joseph Doughton was one of Alleghany's earliest residents, and his lineage would included two of the territory's most prominent citizens: Rufus Doughton, North Carolina's Lieutenant Governor in the early 1890s, and Robert Doughton, a U.S. Representative from 1910 to 1953. Robert Doughton championed the Social Security program and gained national acclaim during Franklin Roosevelt's presidency.
