White Water Rafting on the Gallatin River in Montana

Jul 11, 2012 Wed0

We decided to not go to Glacier National Park since we had lost a day in Beaverton Oregon with truck issues. Tucker had been throwing out the idea of rafting and this change of plans opened up a half day in our schedule. He fired up Paddie and started looking for rafting locations and companies in the Yellowstone area. He called one to get information and before I really understood what was happening my credit card had been used to reserve a trip with Montana Whitewater for Sunday, July 8. Some of the places he had been looking at required a swimming test. I told him to throw a brick in the river and if it floated I would be good because I swim like a brick. Straight to the bottom.

Fortunately a swim test was not required. We got there a little early and ate lunch. After the usual paper work that says you may die on this trip and it is not our fault, we were outfitted with helmets, life jackets, river shoes and jackets that smelled really bad but proved to be worth their stink. The Gallatin River is not dam controlled and consist entirely of snow melt. The water was cold.

The trip went well and we all agreed it was more fun than the trip we took in Maine in 2010. Juliette was a great guide and our raft mates were good people. We enjoyed talking about our travels.
