Battery Disconnect Switch

The disconnect switch.

The power converter in the Wildcat does not have a 'smart' battery charger. Leaving the Wildcat hooked to 120 AC for days or weeks can overcharge the battery, evaporate the sulfuric acid and eventually ruin the battery. However if you leave the Wildcat disconnected from 120 AC for days or weeks, there are devices (propane gas detector for one) that will deplete the battery. Completely discharging a 12 volt battery or leaving it discharged can also ruin the battery.

You can remove a wire from the battery or do what I've done. I added a battery disconnect switch. I found a switch at Northern Hydraulic. I don't remember the amp rating but I know it is over 100 amps. I mounted it near the battery box. I also purchased something called the Battery Tender. I installed a 120 AC box near the battery. I was able to connect to the 120 AC GFCI outlet at the wash basin near the bathroom. The wall is hollow. I ran a wire from the GFCI outlet between the walls through a hole I drilled in the wall under the sink, down through an existing hole in the floor under the sink, into the front storage area underneath. I used the blue flexible conduit to protect and securely mount the wire.

The Battery Tender came with a wiring harness. One end can be permanently connected to the battery terminals. The other end is a quick connect/disconnect plug that plugs into the Battery Tender.

Now when I park my Wildcat for extended periods of time, I turn the disconnect switch 'Off', plug in the Battery Tender to 120 AC and plug the Battery Tender into the quick connect/disconnect plug.

The Battery Tender is a 'smart' charging device and keeps the battery topped off without overcharging it. I keep the Wildcat connected to 120 AC when parked at home. This powers the power converter which supplies 12 volts to the camper to power lights, etc. and the Battery Tender keeps the battery in good shape.
