Last night we stayed in a WalMart in Butte, Montana. We stayed in this same WalMart in 2012 during our last big trip with Tucker. It had a very nice view of the snow capped mountains.
We were able to hit Hardee's (one of my favorite biscuit places) this morning and they had the loaded omelet biscuit which is no longer available in NC. Oh, it was good.
The drive from Butte, Montana to West Yellowstone was beautiful. Big skies and snowy mountains. The small town of Ennis was very photogenic and we have added it to the list of places we want to return to when we retire and spend a few days in the area.
We are loving traveling in the autumn and seeing all the color. But Yellowstone is shutting down. I think we got the last campground in West Yellowstone. They are shutting off the water tomorrow and the host are headed to Blythe, California on Wednesday. There has been way more autumn color than we expected. There is a tree that looks like a spruce but its leaves turn yellow and drop every year. Apparently it is a Larch tree.
There is no one in Yellowstone in October. The locals talk about the crowds that arrive in December for the winter season, but we had Old Faithful pretty much to ourselves. Huge parking lots with not a single car. We love it. Two park roads are closed by snow and the Beartooth Highway leaving the east entrance that we always take is closed for the season.
It was fun standing in the gusts of warm steam. I got some nice photographs and we ended the day at the Canyon Street Grill with some luscious baked potatoe soup and chili.
Finally found a Hardee's and they had the loaded omelet biscuit which is no longer available in NC.
